Traces of War

If you are going to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa to see the Deadly Skies exhibition, make sure you stop to see the Traces of War exhibition that is on display (free of charge) in the lobby.

Twelve panels consisting of text and photographs tell the stories of some Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who answered the call and either went overseas, or served at home.

Some of these include women who gathered at Government House at the invitation of Lady Margaret Davidson – wife of Newfoundland's governor – to knit, sew and cut clothing to be sent overseas for servicemen; an Inuit trapper and hunter who went on to be an excellent sniper before being killed in battle; a nurse who served in both France and Turkey before returning home to become a teacher; Leonard Stick, who was the first to enlist in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, was injured at Beaumont Hamel, but managed to survive the war and go on to be a member of parliament.

The exhibition continues until January 1, 2017.
